Attention is a finite resource. Asking a busy nurse, a new hire, or a compliance manager to sit through a 45 minute eLearning module and retain the key points is, frankly, optimistic. Microlearning offers a more realistic approach and the evidence supports it.
What Microlearning Actually Is
Microlearning isn’t just short content. It’s focused content a single concept, skill, or decision delivered in 3–7 minutes and immediately applicable. The format can vary: a short video, an interactive scenario, a quick assessment, an infographic. What makes it micro is the scope, not just the length.
Why It Works
The human brain doesn’t store information the way a hard drive does. We forget most of what we learn within 24 hours unless it’s reinforced. Microlearning works with this reality rather than against it. By delivering focused content in short bursts and spacing it out over time retention improves dramatically. This is the spacing effect in practice.
Where It Works Best
Microlearning is particularly effective for compliance refreshers, just-in-time performance support, onboarding sequences, and skills reinforcement after a longer programme. It’s less suited to complex topics that require sustained reasoning or deep conceptual understanding for those, longer structured learning still has its place.
Small, purposeful, and well-timed that’s the formula. Not short for the sake of it, but focused for the sake of the learner.
